Vancouver Rundown Friday April 12, 2024
Summary
The union that represents RCMP officers says its members can’t work under a Surrey Police Service without changes to the federal laws. That claim is the latest monkey wrench in the troubled transition from the Mounties to a city force. It also comes a day after Mayor Brenda Locke and her council rejected a $250 million aid package from the B.C. government to help pay for the switch.
Other news…
‘Complicated and sensitive’ - that’s the reasoning behind the Vancouver Police Department admitting it did not tell the public that a family was violently kidnapped in East Van last year. Four people were held hostage for a short time after thugs broke into a home. The cops are now telling the story as two men and a teen get set to appear in court on charges relating to the kidnapping.
For now, Vancouver has put the kibosh on any plans to allow the sale of magic mushrooms in the city. Mayor Ken Sim says the sale of the psychedelics is illegal. That means the federal government would have to change the rules before ‘shrooms are available over the counter.
The spring ski season comes to a close this weekend at Cypress and Seymour. Grouse is expected to close at the end of the month. That news follows a late season snow dump with fresh powder. It’s been a challenging season for the local hills with higher than normal temperatures and less precipitation.
A few showers are still possible in Friday’s forecast. Sunshine is coming for Saturday and Sunday with highs in the upper teens. Here are the latest conditions from our private weather station in Surrey.
