Breaking news: Central Fraser Valley Search and Rescue members have been tasked to help in the Amber Alert search for a three month old baby, Tyler Durocher, and a young woman. Brianne Ford, 35, was last seen at an address near 72 Avenue and 208 Street in Langley late Thursday afternoon. It’s believed a woman took off on foot with the baby, prompting concerns about the child’s well-being. RCMP have posted a B.C. wide Amber Alert asking those knowing their whereabouts to call 9-1-1.
Summary
People have to do more to make their homes fire resilient - especially in areas that are prone to wildfires. That’s the main takeback following the preliminary findings of a joint study by FPInnovations, B.C.’s FireSmart program and the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction. Those findings suggest embers, some of which traveled across Okanagan Lake, are to blame for many of the huge wildfires in the Okanagan and Shuswap last summer. Those embers ignited bushes around homes and flames quickly spread to cars, boats, RVs and even hot tubs.
Other news…
Don’t expect your local mayor to automatically become the chair of a city police force. The B.C. government has changed the rules so councils will select the chairs - it’s one of several tinkerings with the Police Act that could change the way policing is handled in Vancouver and Surrey. It also follows a lengthy dispute between Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth and Mayor Brenda Locke over whether a Surrey Police Service will replace the existing RCMP.
Two construction workers have been rescued from a shaft at a construction site in the Whalley area of Surrey. Both were pulled from a hole near 104 Avenue and 132 Street late Thursday morning and revived by paramedics. It appears they were working with primer when overcome by the fumes.
Which is faster a Porche 911 or a rented Audi? That didn’t matter to the BC Highway Patrol after two cars were pulled over for excessive speed just east of Chilliwack. Police say there were clocked going about 200 km/h.
Enjoy the Friday sunshine, although it could be a bit windy at times. Clouds and showers move in for the weekend and rain is in the forecast for Monday. Here are the latest conditions from our private weather station in Surrey.
