The South Surrey home of a well-known B.C. Sikh activist has been targeted in a Thursday morning shooting. Shots were fired outside the home of Simranjeet Singh, an outspoken support of an independent Sikh state in India. Friends say a bullet narrowly missed a six-year-old boy inside the home on 154 Street. Singh’s friend, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, was shot to death outside the Guru Nanak Gudwara on June 18, 2023.

The Metro Vancouver transit job action is coming to an end. Both CUPE 4500 and Coast Mountain Bus have accepted mediator Vince Ready’s recommendations. That word puts an end to union threats of once again shutting down bus and SeaBus service this weekend.
The tent encampment at the north end of the Oak Street Bridge may be dismantled Friday. Provincial Housing Minister Ravi Kahlon says those inside the tents face the possibility of arrest if they don’t move out of the park in Marpole. Safety issues including fire hazards and the busy street are just some of the reasons the camp faces removal.
A $10M compensation package is now being offered to those who were taken from their homes as children and placed in a Sons of Freedom Doukhobor supported facility in the 1950s. Survivors described the facility in New Denver as being like a prison. It’s believed many of the 100 or so survivors, now in their 70s and 80s, still suffer as a result of the physical and psychological trauma inflected on them close to 70 years ago.
