Vancouver Rundown Friday February 23, 2024
Summary
It’s a record $7.9 billion deficit for B.C. The provincial NDP is gearing up for an election year with a number of incentives, especially for low to middle-income earners. Thursday’s budget includes a one time bonus of about $445 for families under the BC Family Benefit Fund. Homeowners will also get a slight break on their BC Hydro bills, amounting to less than $10 a month and there will be a 10 per cent increase to the Climate Action Tax Credit.
Other news…
No arrests have been made but investigators have lots of video after four people were shot early Thursday morning in a residential area of White Rock. One of the victims suffered critical injuries…there’s no word on the others’ conditions. Video from the scene shows a single shooter using an assault-style gun to shoot up an SUV. A burned out car was found nearby - this shooting is most certainly gang related.
What can be done in Vancouver if you have an extra $2.7 million to help prevent gang recruitment? That’s what City council will be figuring out. The cash has been given to Vancouver as part of the federal government’s ‘building safer communities fund.’ Expect more support for a variety of youth programs.
Breaking: Say goodbye to Lynx Air! The ultra low cost Calgary-based airline will cease operations on Monday. The news comes after the two-year-old airline tried to secure creditor protection.
Friday will have a mix of sun and clouds. The weekend still looks a bit dire with rain in the forecast for Saturday and rain and wind for Sunday. Here are the latest conditions from our private weather station in Surrey.
