Summary
You can’t fix stupid. I’ve said that while guest hosting on CKNW and I say that once again as politicians, law enforcement, driving schools and truckers’ associations try to figure out a way to stop rigs from hitting highway structures overhead. A truck with an overheight load scraped the bottom of the Massey Tunnel entrance on Wednesday evening. No one was hurt. This is the latest in a series of incidents involving trucks failing to clear overhead structures. The province is upping the fines on truckers and their companies. Still - and I will say it one more time - it won’t work because you can’t fix stupid.
Other news…
“Incredibly frustrating” - those are the words Premier David Eby is using after the City of Surrey decided not to pay 10 new Surrey Police Service recruits. Peter German - an advisory to the City - has told the Surrey Now-Leader that the situation is quite simple. He says the SPS was told it’s over budget and should not hire any more officers…but they apparently hired 10 more. Mayor Brenda Locke and the B.C. Government remain in a battle over the future of policing in Surrey with Locke wanting to retain the RCMP and the province saying the SPS transition must go ahead.
The B.C. Association of Police Chiefs has high praise for the use of body-worn cameras by officers. It says the BCWs will improve transparency and accountability. The Vancouver Police Department started its six-month pilot project with the cameras last week.
Four people have been rescued after their boat started taking on water north of Port Hardy Wednesday evening. It happened during stormy weather. A pair of fast rescue boats assisted the Coast Guard with bringing the four to safety. There’s no word on their conditions.
Friday will be very cold. The weekend will remain cool enough for possible snow and the start of the next weekend will still have highs around the freezing mark. That combined with some wind will make things rather nasty - especially in parts of the Fraser Valley. Here are the latest conditions from our private weather station in Surrey.
