Vancouver Rundown Friday January 10, 2025
Summary
Crews from B.C. have now arrived in Southern California to help battle the deadly wildfires around Los Angeles. Helicopters from Port Alberni-based Coulson Aviation have been working the frontlines. Wind gusts of over 100 kilometres an hour continue to challenge firefighters working on massive wildfires in Palisades and Pasadena as well as smaller ones around the county. A new fire erupted in the Calabasas area Thursday afternoon, forcing hundreds more to evacuate.
Other news…
Christy Clark will run for the federal Liberal leadership. A campaigner for the former premier confirmed the widespread speculation telling The National Post he expects Clark to be in the race and win it unless there are some crazy rules. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has already dubbed Clark the ‘carbon tax queen.’
The Vancouver Island University Mariners refuse to travel to Abbotsford this weekend for a women’s basketball game calling the host venue ‘unsafe.’ The decision stems back to two incidents in October when Abbotsford’s Columbia Bible College coach Taylor Claggett was accused of anti-transgender tirades targeting transgender player Harriette Mackenzie. Columbia Bible College says the ‘unsafe’ claims are untrue and misinformed.
A 13-year-old girl has now been discharged from BC Children’s Hospital after being treated for avian flu. The girl, who became the first critical pediatric patient, was first treated in hospital back in early November - at one point, she had to be intubated. The girl’s family is thanking caregivers and the public for their support.
Rain Friday morning and then a mix of sun and cloud in the afternoon. Gusty winds. Sun and cloud for Saturday. Mostly sunny on Sunday. Here are the latest conditions from our private weather station in Surrey.
