Vancouver Rundown Friday July 19, 2024
Summary
Over a hundred people are on evacuation order as the Shetland Creek wildfire continues to grow. That order covers several reserves of the Cook’s Ferry Indian Band. And many small roads leading to Highway One between Spences Bridge and Cache Creek are now closed. The Village of Ashcroft issued an evacuation alert for Ashcroft Ranch late Thursday evening. Meanwhile, Ashcroft Mayor Barbara Roden is slamming the provincial government and its BC Wildfire Service for a lack of communication in responding to the rapidly growing fire. It’s now close to 50 kilometres but area residents have almost no real-time information about its growth.
Other news…
Two people are dead and one is seriously hurt following a Thursday afternoon plane crash near Tofino. The small private plane hit the runway at the Long Beach airport at around 1:00 p.m. A survivor was pulled from the plane and rushed to hospital while two others died at the scene.
A roaming black bear has been euthanized after a woman was bit in Deep Cove. The bite happened as the woman was gardening at her home Wednesday afternoon - she was not seriously hurt. The North Shore Black Bear Society says the Conservation Service’s decision to put-down the bear is unfortunate but completely necessary.
The Okanagan’s only private TV station is laying off close to 20 people. Corus, which continues to struggle with a massive debt problem, is cutting staff and local programming at Kelowna-based Global Okanagan. Similar moves are also happening at Corus’s smaller market TV operations in Ontario.
B.C.’s hot, dry conditions will continue through the weekend. More sunshine and warm temperatures are in the Lower Mainland forecast with inland highs up to 30C by Saturday. Here are the latest conditions from our private weather station in Surrey.
