Vancouver Rundown Friday July 5, 2024
Summary
Great views of the city and mountains may soon be disappearing thanks to Vancouver relaxing its view cone policies to increase housing. City council is expected to vote next week on staff recommendations to reduce or eliminate many of the building height restrictions designed to protect views. Staff believe a relaxation could create up to 215 million square feet of housing space. The recommendation could impact about 35 per cent of the protected view cones.
Other news…
Another NDP MLA will not be running for re-election. Labour Minister and Surrey-Newton MLA Harry Bains is stepping aside. This is the second high profile Surrey based Cabinet Minister to call it quits. Surrey-Whalley MLA Bruce Ralston confirmed this week he will not seek a sixth term in the October 19th provincial election.
Vancouver Police now confirm they are seeking a couple of men in a suspicious death that dates back to May 30. A 35-year-old man was found dead in his West End apartment on that date. Police are looking for two men who were seen with that guy just before his death.
BC Ferries continues to have problems maintaining summer sailings. Two early Thursday morning sailings were cancelled on the Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay route because of rudder problems with the Queen of New Westminster. The problem did not impact later sailings.
Sunny and hot heading into the weekend. Highs will range from 26 on the coast to 32 inland through Sunday. Here are the latest conditions from our private weather station in Surrey.
