Vancouver Rundown Friday June 14, 2024
Summary
‘Suck it up’ - that’s the message from Premier David Eby to Uber and other gig-based app companies that link drivers with those wanting rides or food deliveries. The response comes as Uber sounds the alarm about the cost of B.C.’s new legislation that will offer a basic minimum wage of $20.88 per hour and 35 cents per km for drivers engaged in a ride or delivery. Those same drivers will also be covered by WorkSafeBC as of Sep 3. Both Uber and Skip the Dishes say this will drive up costs for those who order food deliveries online.
Other news…
The BC Teachers Federation has now removed the online presence of a group linked to anti-Israeli rallies. The move comes after leaders in the Jewish community questioned why the BCTF would support such a group while denying Holocaust education materials from another group. The union representing B.C.’s public school teachers has since apologized saying it will take action to support Holocaust education.
B.C.’s largest credit union is cutting 200 employees. Vancity says its move is incredibly difficult but required to align with current market conditions. Vancity has more the 50 branches in the Lower Mainland and around the province.
You can now drink a libation at one of Vancouver’s two public pitch-and-putt courses. Some B.C. wines and two locally produced beers will be sold at the Stanley Park and Queen Elizabeth Park courses in a move designed to bring in more cash and boost the vibrancy of public spaces. Drinks will only be sold near the course entrances…not on roaming carts.
A mix of sun and clouds for Friday. Rain on Saturday and showers on Sunday. The weather improves on Monday. Here are the latest conditions from our private weather station in Surrey.
