Vancouver Rundown Friday June 6, 2025
Summary
Homes are now threatened in northeastern B.C. as wildfires in the Peace River Region continues to grow. Crews fear high winds and possible thunderstorms this weekend will lead to a dangerous situation for those near Kelly Lake who are ignoring evacuation orders. The Regional District says rescuing any trapped residents may not be possible. The Kiskatinaw Lake wildfire is now more than 70 square kilometres and remains B.C.’s only major blaze.
Breaking News: A sinkhole has closed the Coquihalla Highway - northbound - between Hope and Merritt. Maintenance contractor YRB Nicola says the sinkhole appeared Thursday and crews will be trying to figure out what to do about it Friday. Drivers are being told to use Highway One or Highway Three instead.
Other news…
There’s new hope for revitalizing Granville Street. Vancouver has approved a 20 year plan to revitalize the entertainment area with a mix of live music venues, rooftop patios, hotels and commercial developments. In recent years, the downtown stretch of Granville has become increasingly violent with late night fights, drug use and general crime.
Many business owners now say they’re struggling to survive after the City of Langley closed down a one-way stretch of Fraser Highway in the heart of the downtown commercial area. Some restaurants are reporting business is down close to 50 per cent as vehicle traffic remains blocked-off and pedestrians are forced to walk under scaffolding. The City of Langley started a major project earlier this year to improve infrastructure, landscaping and public spaces in that area.
A special weather statement is in effect for much of the South Coast with an early season heat event and inland temperatures near 30C this weekend. Sunny and very warm Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Here are the latest conditions from our private weather station in Surrey.
