Vancouver Rundown Friday March 1, 2024
Summary
With a round of reflection and admiration for what many describe as a consequential Prime Minister, leaders in this country and around the world are reacting to the passing of Brian Mulroney. Canada’s 18th Prime Minister died Thursday afternoon in Palm Beach, Florida. His daughter, Caroline, says he died peacefully, surrounded by family members.
A lawyer by profession, Mulroney was an outstanding public speaker, negotiator and strategic politician. As a Progressive Conservative prime minister from 1984-1993, he signed the Canada-US free trade deal and North American Free Trade Agreement, introduced a federal tax on goods and services and deregulated many industries. Despite negotiating the Meech Lake Accord on constitutional reform, Mulroney failed to get it approved by all ten provinces.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau remembers Mulroney as ‘someone who had the courage to do big things.”
Premier David Eby issued a three part thread on X calling Mulroney a true statesmen who represented our country with pride.
(Martin) Brian Mulroney was 84.
