Vancouver Rundown Friday March 21, 2025
Summary
Canadians will go to the polls in a snap federal election. On Sunday, Prime Minister Mark Carney will ask the Governor General to dissolve Parliament and call an election. That vote will take place either April 28 or May 5. The latest polls show a huge uptick in support for the Liberals following Justin Trudeau’s resignation - the Liberals and Conservatives appear to be in a dead heat right now.
Other news…
Two people are critically injured and almost a dozen others have been checked out in hospital after a Thursday morning fire at a supportive housing complex in Burnaby. The fire started at around 3:00 a.m. in the building on Kingsway. The cause is still being investigated - close to 20 people are now displaced.
A 21-year-old man from Burnaby has been found guilty of manslaughter in the stabbing death of a teen on a Surrey bus in April of 2023. A 17-year-old was stabbed in the chest while riding on the 503 near King George Station. Kaiden Mintenko will be back in court in April to fix a date for sentencing.
A Tesla dealership on the Langley Bypass will likely be hit by protesters on Saturday. The Tesla Takedown movement is planning what it calls a peaceful, non-destructive protest at the dealership from noon to 2:00 p.m. Organizers say it’s not about the cars but Tesla’s owner - Elon Musk. It comes as Musk joins Donald Trump in continuing to make disparaging comments about Canada - including making it the 51st U.S. state.
Periods of rain on Friday, windy at times. Showers on Saturday. Rain on Sunday. Here are the latest conditions from our private weather station in Surrey.
