Vancouver Rundown Friday May 24, 2024
Summary
The provincial government has won its battle with Mayor Brenda Locke and the City of Surrey over the cop swap that never stops (full credit to punster Bob Mackin). The B.C. Supreme Court has nixed the petition aimed at ending Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth’s endorsement of transitioning from the RCMP to the Surrey Police Service. Locke has not said whether an appeal may be in the works but does say she accepts this ruling.
Other news…
Mayor Brenda Locke says there are far too many dangerous offenders flocking to Surrey. The Mounties have issued notices about three of them in the past few weeks. The provincial government is reviewing how B.C. Corrections notifies the public about releases and moves to certain communities - this after Locke and the Surrey Board of Trade raised concerns.
One of the largest and oldest parades in B.C. is set to go Saturday morning. The 53rd Annual Hyak International Parade and Festival is expected to attract thousands to the streets of New Westminster under a mostly cloudy sky. The parade starts at 11:00 a.m. and there will be road closures and delays through much of the downtown New Westminster core.
Cyber attackers appear to have made good on their threat to release London Drug’s private information. The retailer has confirmed that employee data has been leaked on the dark web. The attackers had demanded a $25M ransom against a Thursday deadline.
Don’t expect much in the way of good weather for the weekend as Friday’s sunny patches fade away. Saturday will be cloudy with a chance of showers. Sunday will be rainy. Here are the latest conditions from our private weather station in Surrey.
