Vancouver Rundown Friday May 9, 2025
Summary
Vancouver’s Catholic Archbishop is surprised by the choice of an American as the new Pope. Archbishop Michael Miller says he’s pleased the best man available was chosen…someone who just happens to be American. Chicago born Robert Prevost was elected the 267th pope in a vote by his fellow cardinals. The 69-year-old will be known as Pope Leo XIV.
Other news…
The Tsawwassen First Nation has joined the mayors of Delta and Surrey in demanding the provincial government set up urgent primary care centres in or near Delta. That call comes in light of increasing demands on Delta Hospital and some recent temporary closures of the ER. They would like two new urgent primary care centres - one in North Delta and the other in Tsawwassen.
A former City of Surrey clerk has been accused of defrauding taxpayers of close to $2.5M. Surrey Police and financial crimes officers with the RCMP say the finance clerk wrote close to 200 cheques to herself and her boutique cake making business. Details on the pending charges have not yet been released.
It’s hoped a necropsy will shed some light on the cause of death after a grey whale washed ashore on Long Beach near Tofino this week. Researchers say more than six such whales have died in the Salish Sea in recent months. At this point, there is no confirmation on what pod that whale belonged to.
Mainly cloudy Friday. Clouds and showers Saturday. A mix of sun and cloud for Sunday. Here are the latest conditions from our private weather station in Surrey.
