Vancouver Rundown Friday November 29, 2024
Summary
Expect to pay a lot more to use BC Ferries. Despite several government cash bailouts, BC Ferries says demand continues to grow and the fleet is being pushed to the limit. A 30 per cent increase in fares is possible. The cost of replacing ferries has increased 40 per cent since 2020. The provincial government imposed a temporary cap on fare increases last year after giving BC Ferries and additional 500 million dollars.
Other news…
The elderly driver of an SUV is lucky to be alive after a wheel flew off a dump truck on Highway One between Abbotsford and Chilliwack late Thursday morning. The truck driver has been fined at least $700 - the BC Highway Patrol says the incident was completely preventable. The 10-year-old truck has also been removed from the road. RCMP will only say the operating company and its driver are from Delta.
Friday is official transition day - the Surrey RCMP relinquish jurisdiction to the new Surrey Police Service. The move may be in name and leadership authority only as a transition of services is expected to be complete sometime in 2026. So far, the Surrey Police Service has fallen far short of hiring the number of officers it promised.
Another south coast skill hill is opening this weekend. Mount Washington on Vancouver Island will be in operation two weeks earlier than expected after what operators describe as an ‘incredible snow dump.’ Whislter-Blackcomb as well as Grouse and Cypress are already open - all hills have limited operations at this point.
Fog early Friday morning and then some drizzle throughout the day. Rain on Saturday. A mix of sun and cloud for Sunday. Here are the latest conditions from our private weather station in Surrey.
