Vancouver Rundown Friday October 25, 2024
Summary
British Columbians will have to wait until next week - at the earliest - to learn the official results of the provincial election. Elections BC says a final count will be finished on Monday. If election night results hold, David Eby will most likely remain as premier in a minority government. The BC Greens will hold the balance of power and are not entertaining any notions of partnering with the BC Conservatives to remove the NDP from power.
Other news…
Stan Persky has died. The longtime B.C. leftist activist, intellectual, writer and pundit gained attention for his acts of civil disobedience in the 1960s, 70s and 80s including smashing bottles of South African wine to protest the sales in government liquor stores despite federal sanctions on apartheid. He penned numerous essays, poems and opinion pieces and taught college courses over a 20 plus year career. Persky passed away in Berlin last week - he was 83.
Jenga the giraffe is dead. The Greater Vancouver Zoo has confirmed its eight-year-old giraffe died peacefully Wednesday evening. The BC SPCA says it will be looking into the death at the Aldergrove based zoo - giraffe’s can live 20 to 30 years in the wild.
Some of those living in the Village of Harrison Hot Springs are outraged after finding a local, free natural spring pool covered by boulders. They accuse the operators of the nearby Harrison Hot Springs Resort of destroying ‘Hobo Hot Springs.’ The resort has raised concerns about liabilities relating to those taking a dip at the site - located a short walk from the hotel.
Fog Friday morning and then a mix of sun and clouds with possible showers later in the day. Rain for Saturday and Sunday. Here are the latest conditions from our private weather station in Surrey.
