Vancouver Rundown Monday April 15, 2024
Summary
The B.C. government has now formally recognized the Haida’s Aboriginal title over all of Haida Gwaii. The agreement comes after at least ten years of talks - all of which stayed out of the courts. Privately owned lands will remain unchanged but decisions over Crown land will now include Haida law. Some legal experts in Indigenous law say this agreement may lead to more confusion than any uncertainty over a pending title case.
Other news…
Eight years and counting. That’s how long B.C. has been under a public emergency declaration in the toxic drug crisis. Premier David Eby says the government is committed to saving lives and building a better, more connected system of mental-health and addictions care. His comments come after opposition members declared B.C.’s relaxation of laws covering the possession of small amounts of hard drugs…a disaster.
Former Chilliwack School Board Trustee Barry Nuefeld has been ordered to pay a current trustee $45,000 for calling her a ‘strip tease artist.’ A B.C. Supreme Court Justice has ruled Nuefeld must pay Carin Bondar general and punitive damages for a remark he made in a September 2022 online interview. No aggravated damages will be awarded.
A three alarm fire in Burnaby has left all residents of an apartment building on Albert Street near Willingdon Avenue without a home. Two firefighters were slightly hurt in the blaze that broke out early Saturday evening. There’s no official word on the cause.
Monday will have a slight chance of showers. By Tuesday, it’s back to sunshine for the rest of the work week. Here are the latest conditions from our private weather station in Surrey.
