It was a stinky weekend for people living in parts of Burnaby, Vancouver and several other Lower Mainland neighbourhoods after the discharge of steam from the Parkland Refinery. The strong odour followed a round of regular maintenance at the Burnaby plant but caused many folks to call the Burnaby and Vancouver Fire Departments to complain. Most described it as smelling like burning plastic or rubber. Those with the Metro Vancouver Regional District will be checking to see if the refinery broke any air quality regulations.
There’s still no word on the cause of a massive Friday night fire that destroyed much of a vacant apartment building on 2nd Street East in the City of North Vancouver. Firefighters battled the blaze through the night and into the mid-morning on Saturday. Crews were not able to confirm whether anyone was inside the building.
The young man gunned-down outside an Abbotsford mall on Saturday was involved in a 2020 gang related shootout. The Abbotsford News reports Amritpal Saran, 25, was also due in court on Tuesday for sentencing in that incident. Saran was shot and killed near the Seven Oaks Best Buy at around dinner time. Homicide investigators are looking for suspects in what appears to be a targeted shooting involving rival gang members.
