Vancouver Rundown Monday June 17, 2024
Summary
Heavy rain caused massive flooding along Marine Drive in White Rock over the weekend. On Saturday morning, water was seen streaming down several streets - part of Marine Drive was closed for several hours. Meanwhile, that same storm system produced a rare funnel cloud between Abbotsford and Chilliwack. There are no confirmed reports of it touching down.
Other news…
A body has been recovered from a boating incident east of Mission. It’s believed two men were in a small power boat doing donuts when it hit its own wake, tossing both into the water. The passenger managed to swim to shore. The 37-year-old driver’s body was later recovered in Nicomen Slough.
One person has suffered smoke inhalation in a small fire in a townhouse complex near Cambie and SW Marine Drive in Vancouver. It happened late Saturday morning - smoke could be seen in parts of South Vancouver and Richmond. Crews managed to free a stuck person from the otherwise abandoned building.
Fingers are being pointed at the annual compensation for the Metro Vancouver Regional District’s top bureaucrat. Chief Administrative Officer Jerry Dobrovolny earned a base salary of just over $450,000 per year plus over $220,000 in taxable benefits and $37,000 in expenses. Metro Vancouver has issued a statement saying it stands behind the $700,000 in compensation, calling it in-line with other organizations of similar scale.
Some clouds and isolated showers Monday morning will give way to a mix of sun and cloud for the afternoon. Then, it’s sunny and warming up for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Here are the latest conditions from our private weather station in Surrey.
