Summary
Mark Carney has been chosen the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, replacing Justin Trudeau. That means Carney will become the country’s 24th prime minister. He promises to call a federal election soon. Carney, who served as both the head of the Bank of Canada and then the Bank of England, claimed 86 per cent of the votes in the Liberal leadership race. Chrystia Freeland came in second with only eight per cent.

Cold and wet but otherwise okay. That’s the fate of a hiker who spent the night on a North Shore backcountry mountain trail before being rescued Sunday afternoon. The hiker’s bright blue tarp was spotted by rescuers in a helicopter. The area had been hit by heavy rain over the weekend.
Hundreds gathered in Chilliwack Friday night to remember a three-year-old boy who was struck and killed by the driver of a pickup. The candlelight vigil took place near Vedder and Petawawa roads, where young Everett Janz was hit Wednesday morning. Chilliwack has had three fatal pedestrian crashes in the last three weeks.
The future of Vancouver’s iconic BowMac sign on West Broadway is once again in question. Toys R Us, which kept the sign and incorporated its own name over top, is closing its Vancouver location at the corner of Alder and West Broadway. The exact date is unclear. The toy store giant has been at there since the closure of the BowMac car sales lot in the 1990s.
