Vancouver Rundown Monday May 13, 2024
Summary
An out-of-control forest fire continued to burn through the weekend, keeping people from their homes in Fort Nelson. The 2,000 hectare fire’s been growing in an area four kilometres west of the community and there are concerns about the wind pushing the flames toward town. Highway 97 has been closed north of Fort Nelson.
Other news…
A fourth man has now been charged in last June’s shooting death of Hardeep Singh Nijjar outside the Sikh temple on Scott Road in Surrey. Amandeep Singh, 22, has been charged with both first degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. The Indian government continues to deny any roll in the killing and accuses Canada of providing safe shelter to those who plan harm against the country.
Many could see this coming! The opening of the Kitsilano Pool has been delayed due to ‘unforeseen repairs.’ The pool was expected to open on May 18 after an early closure last year due to substantial leaks. It’s almost 50 years old. Park Board staff have been working to try to get it open for this summer.
People across the Lower Mainland joined others around North America over the weekend, trying to catch a glimpse of the northern lights during an intense geomagnetic storm. Most of the best photos came on Friday night - some even taken across from the bright lights of English Bay. Photos shared on social media came from viewers in locations as far south as Florida.
A few more clouds and cooler conditions are expected Monday with possible showers overnight. Tuesday and Wednesday will be mostly sunny. Here are the latest conditions from our private weather station in Surrey.
