Vancouver Rundown Thursday August 22, 2024
Summary
Assault charges have been laid against two Vancouver Police officers in a violent incident that happened in the city in late 2023. Global News reports both Joshua Wong and Brian Hunt were off-duty at the time. Neither is serving in an operational role right now while their case is before the courts. Constable Wong was one of several officers investigated in a violent assault that resulted in the death of Myles Gray in 2015 - he was never charged but did testify at a coroner’s inquest.
Other news…
A man has been chased-down and arrested by police after a Surrey Police cruiser was rammed in Whalley Wednesday afternoon. RCMP say it happened as the driver of an SUV tried to evade capture - that suspect ran-off after the cruiser was hit but was eventually caught by officers. The man is still in jail awaiting a bail hearing and will likely be charged with numerous offences.
Extended days are coming to six of Surrey’s high schools as the district deals with over-crowding. They include Grandview Heights, Fleetwood Park, Lord Tweedsmuir, Kwantlen Park, Tamanawis and Salish. A convoluted five block system means students will now attend the first four blocks, the last four blocks or the first and last two blocks with a bigger break in-between.
It’s not over yet - that’s the cautionary warning from the BC Wildfire Service as the province is declared ‘in good shape’ in terms of forest fires. Cloudy skies and cooler temperatures continue to help and two of the ‘fires of note’ are considered ‘held.’ There are 350 fires burning in B.C. right now - well below normal for this time of year.
A mix of clouds, showers and sunny breaks for Thursday. Pouring rain on Friday. Here are the latest conditions from our private weather station in Surrey.
