Vancouver Rundown Thursday August 1, 2024
Summary
One person has been hurt and an evacuation order is in place after a landslide in a remote area along the Chilcotin River, west of Williams Lake. The Tsilhqot'in has issued an updated Stage 2 Emergency due to a danger of unpredictable water flows in at least one area. The few people living along the river are being told to leave. Most of the evacuees are being told to head toward Highway 20 and then east to Williams Lake.
Other news…
Mayor Ken Sim says everyone who lives, works or visits Vancouver deserves to feel safe and secure. That’s the bottom line from a statement issued after a man was charged in one of three random stabbing attacks that happened back on July 22 in or near the Granville Entertainment District. Jeronimo Fuentes, 29, is now charged with aggravated assault after a man was stabbed in the back on Nelson Street near Hornby. Sim says the charged man is from Surrey and was on probation.
Some West Vancouver residents are pissed off that the city has sold public beach access to a private buyer. The move was made to get a private buyer for a lot off Park Lane also interested in buying a municipal lot next door. One resident told the CBC, “the message is West Van is for sale. If you have the money, then come talk to us.”
Don’t jump off a cliff in Lynn Canyon. That’s the message from District of North Vancouver Fire and Rescue as the weather starts to heat up again. The water below the cliffs has very strong currents and below surface hazard. Many swimmers have been hurt or even died from jumping into Lynn Creek.
Mostly sunny on Thursday with inland highs of 30. Sunny and warm Friday and right through the long weekend. Here are the latest conditions from our private weather station in Surrey.
