Vancouver Rundown Thursday January 9, 2025
Summary
‘The skies [are] black and you can see the fires from everywhere’ - that’s just one description from one of the many people who have returned to Vancouver from Los Angeles. Passengers arriving at YVR describe horrific scenes of smoke, flame and carnage as crews continue to fight to control the wildfires burning in several areas around LA. At least five people have died, hundreds are injured and thousands of homes have been destroyed as strong Santa Ana winds continue to blow embers across properties.
Other news…
British Columbians are once again required to wear masks in hospitals and other healthcare facilities. The Health Ministry says it’s bolstering infection control measures during the respiratory illness season. Healthcare workers, volunteers and visitors must now wear medical masks in areas where patients are actively receiving care.
The B.C. Conservatives now claim there were voting irregularities during last fall’s provincial election. Leader John Rustad is using a Thursday news conference to question the results in Surrey-Guildford where the NDP’s Garry Begg defeated his Conservative opponent by only 22 votes. That result was confirmed in a judicial recount and helped cement the NDP’s narrow majority in the B.C. Legislature.
Say goodbye to all of the Ricki’s and Cleo clothing stores in B.C. Comark Holdings, which operates the stores along with Bootlegger, has filed for creditor protection. The company is based in Ontario but has a dozen Ricki’s locations from Vancouver Island to Prince George. There are 54 Cleo stores across the country.
Cloudy with fog patches on Thursday…a mix of sun and cloud in the afternoon. Periods of rain on Friday, windy at times. A mix of sun, clouds and possible showers for Saturday. Here are the latest conditions from our private weather station in Surrey
