Vancouver Rundown Thursday June 27, 2024
Summary
Should Vancouver’s mayor turn civic space into “Ken's mojo dojo casa house?” That’s the exact wording Councillor Pete Fry is using to question why Ken Sim has turned a City Hall third floor boardroom into a private exercise space. The mayor has held a news conference to defend the space saying it’s a way to improve health, well-being and privacy for his office. Fry has likened the move to a stereotypical bachelor pad from the 2023 Barbie movie.
Other news…
Vancouver has scrapped parking requirements for new developments in the city. Council voted in favour of the move as a way to streamline building permits. The action won’t have any impact on accessible spaces for those with disabilities.
Traffic has ground to a halt on AM730. Corus Entertainment has shut down its Vancouver all traffic radio station as well as a 880 CHQT in Edmonton. A statement from the company says Corus will operate only one news-talk station in each city. There’s no word yet on where the next Whitecaps game will be broadcast. For now, 730 is rebroadcasting a program feed from 980 CKNW.
Three First Nations are demanding the return of land used for a Surrey potato farm. The 300 acres of federal land has been used by the Heppell family in their potato farming business - they want the Campbell Heights land placed into the Agricultural Land Reserve. The Katzie, Kwantlen and Semiahmoo believe senior levels of government must allow the bands to make decisions about future use.
Periods of showers for both Thursday and Friday. A mix of sun and clouds for Saturday and Sunday. Here are the latest conditions from our private weather station in Surrey.
