Vancouver Rundown Thursday May 30, 2024
Summary
At least one person’s been arrested after RCMP moved in on anti-Israeli protesters on the main UBC campus. The blockade disrupted movement around the busy Westbrook Mall area at the Point Grey campus. The protesters continue to demand UBC cut ties with Israeli universities and companies that do business with Israel. This follows an international student movement aimed at condemning Israeli retaliations following the Hamas terrorist attack on Oct 7 that killed at least 1,200 people.
Other news…
Sparks! Smoke! A crowded platform! No, it wasn’t a rock concert but rather a malfunction at the Rupert SkyTrain Station in East Vancouver. The track issue caused major delays on the Millennium Line at around 8:00 a.m. Wednesday morning…at the height of the morning commute. No one was hurt. Full service resumed within two hours.
You might see more corporate names on City of Vancouver public spaces. The city is considering selling naming rights to venues such as public parks in an effort to generate more revenue. Discussions are expected to start in the early fall.
Pilots at WestJet Encore have now issued 72-hour strike notice in an effort to get stalled contract talks restarted. That means the pilots could be in a legal strike position by Saturday. The Airline Pilots Association and WestJet Encore management have failed to get a deal of eight months of negotiations.
Thursday will have a few showers. Friday should be dry but with a mix of sun and clouds. Expect rain for the weekend. Here are the latest conditions from our private weather station in Surrey.
