Vancouver Rundown Thursday September 14, 2023
Summary
Not a moment too soon? Bowing to public pressure? Both are true as B.C. finally bans illegal drugs from playgrounds and skate parks. That follows approval from the federal government and means folks won’t be allowed to have things like cocaine and meth within 15 metres of such areas. The move also allows police to have more powers to keep idiots and addicts away from kids.
Other news…
An arrest has been made in a double homicide in Chilliwack that may be linked to a dispute between neighbours. The victims, a man and a woman, were found inside a home on Chilliwack Lake Road. Homicide investigators are trying to figure out what happened.
Why did Abbotsford-South MLA Bruce Banman defect to the BC Conservatives? Why are the Conservatives out-performing BC United, formerly known as the Liberals, in the latest public opinion poll? These are questions being asked in Victoria as BC United Leader Kevin Falcon faces fallout from yesterday’s high-profile caucus betrayal. Meanwhile, Banman says he has to “stand for what’s right.” Falcon says the move is disappointing but not surprising.
Equifax is now reporting credit card debt has hit an all-time high in Canada. That’s not surprising as Canadians are hit by higher interest rates plus inflation, plus higher housing costs plus a slight dip in employment opportunities. Equifax reports average non-mortgage debt per credit-active consumer edged up to $21,131.
Amazing sunshine for Thursday with highs of 26C inland. More sunshine through the weekend with temperatures going into the mid-20s in the Valley. Here are the latest conditions from our private weather station in Surrey.
