Vancouver Rundown Thursday September 12, 2024
Summary
You will no longer be able to get free crack pipes or any narcotics supplies at government supported vending machines at B.C. hospitals. The provincial government is getting rid of the machines and reviewing its harm reduction approach following a huge public backlash...much of it played out on social media during this election campaign. The vending machines also contained naloxone kits which could be used to reverse the effects of some overdoses.
Other news…
The cost of rent in Surrey and Vancouver continues to rise. New data from Rentals.ca suggests the province’s fastest growing city, Surrey, has had an eight per cent average jump in the cost of rent. That average cost for a one bedroom apartment is $2,100 per month. The average rent for a one bedroom in Vancouver is now $2,900.
A construction mishap knocked out TELUS service to a large section of the Fraser Canyon on Tuesday. Cell calls, including those to 9-1-1, were not possible for much of the day in Yale, Boston Bar, and Hells Gate. It took close to seven hours to restore service to those communities along Highway One.
The Vancouver Humane Society is once again calling for a boycott of horseracing - this time at Hastings Park following an incident on Sept. 6. A horse died and another was injured at the racetrack on that day. Back in May, two other horses died at the same track.
Cloudy Thursday morning. Mostly sunny be the afternoon. A mix of sun and clouds for Friday. Here are the latest conditions from our private weather station in Surrey.
