Vancouver Rundown Tuesday April 23, 2024
Summary
Lower Mainland drivers are getting a bit of a break at the pumps…at least for now. The price of gas has dropped below $2 litre at many stations east of Surrey. Some experts attribute the drop to a switch in seasonal blends and changes with the supply in the Pacific Northwest. That said, the price is expected to climb once again in the weeks ahead.
Breaking news…we have learned an adult and baby have been badly injured in a pedestrian collision in downtown Squamish. It happened near Pemberton Ave and Second Ave at around 8:45 Monday evening. An air ambulance was called-in at the request of paramedics.
Other news…
Some hard drug advocates are ticked that three Metro Vancouver councillors are calling for an end to decriminalization. New Westminster’s Daniel Lafontaine, Linda Annis from Surrey and Richmond’s Alexa Loo have signed-off on a joint statement asking their councils to stop endorsing the B.C. government’s pilot project and start putting more money into treatment and rehab. Activist Garth Mullins is pushing back saying the government has to fully embrace decriminalization in order for toxic drug overdoses to go down.
A man has died in police custody in Chilliwack after officers made an arrest, following some sort of fight inside a vehicle. It happened over the noon hour near Mary Street and Patton Avenue on Monday. The IIO has been called-in to see if the Mounties handled themselves properly.
Don’t count on taking public transit for free on Earth Day. TransLink says the free rides would cost the Metro Vancouver system close to a million bucks. BC Transit will be free in some other communities including Victoria, Whistler and Penticton.
A mix of sun and cloud for Tuesday. Some showers for Wednesday. Rain on Thursday. Here are the current conditions at our private weather station in Surrey.
