Vancouver Rundown Tuesday February 27, 2024
Summary
Brace for a bout of difficult driving conditions as early as Tuesday afternoon. A mix of snow and rain is expected to hit the south coast with more snow than rain at higher elevations. Conditions are even worse for those heading out of Vancouver - this after a series of multi-vehicle crashes on the Coquihalla and Hope-Princeton Highways over the past couple days. Drivers may be best advised to avoid those routes unless absolutely necessary and in a vehicle equipped for winter driving.
Other news…
B.C.’s minimum wage will be going up to $17.40 per hour in June. That’s an increase of 3.9 per cent and its automatic under the province’s new labour laws that tie the pay to the rate of inflation. Labour Minister Harry Bains issued a statement on Monday saying B.C. has gone from having one of Canada’s lowest minimum wages to now having the highest…and that is now enshrined in our laws.
Vancouver Councillor Mike Klassen will not be going to Halifax for the Junos. He’s withdrawn his request for taxpayer cash of $3,650 to join mayor Ken Sim at the awards. Sim’s trip is covered under the mayor’s office budget…Klassen’s would have had to be approved by council. Vancouver will be hosting the awards in 2025.
The Eby government continues to be hammered by opposition MLAs over the price of gas. B.C. United MLA Lorne Doerkson has renewed the call for B.C. to reduce or eliminate provincial taxes on fuel. The Canadian Taxpayers Federation says such a move would reduce the cost of a tank of gas by about $10 for the average driver.
A special weather statement has been posted for Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley and other areas of the South Coast, calling for a mix of rain and snow Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday morning. Moderate to heavy rain is expected across the Lower Mainland late Wednesday. Here are the latest conditions from our private weather station in Surrey.
