Vancouver Rundown Tuesday July 16, 2024
Summary
Crews from both Australia and New Zealand will be arriving in B.C. this week as more wildfires break out around the province. A five kilometre stretch of the east lanes of Highway One, between Chilliwack and Hope, were closed for a while on Monday as fire fighters battled a small fire on the mountain side. The BC Wildfire Service thinks this fire was caused by human activity. A helicopter crew helped those on the ground keep the flames from spreading.
Other news…
At least two houses have been badly damaged in a Monday evening fire in East Vancouver. Smoke could be seen over a large area of the city as crews battled the blaze near 47th and Commercial. So far, there are no indications of injuries.
Mission fire crews assisted those from North Fraser in battling a large and stubborn fire at a home in a rural area on Cascade Court north of Hatzic Lake. Vancouver Rundown has learned a resident called for help when the fire broke out at around 5:00 p.m. Monday. There’s no word on a cause or possible injuries.
Close to 2,000 new homes are proposed for the old Army & Navy-turned-No Frills site just south of Langley City Hall. Developers hope to divide the old Langley Mall lot into four quadrants but have not yet received approval for either of two proposals. The major mixed-use development is within a five minute walk of the most eastern future SkyTrain station. If approved, it would dramatically increase Langley City’s population.
It will remain very warm across the Lower Mainland with inland highs around 30C Tuesday and Wednesday. There is still no rain in sight. Here are the latest conditions from our private weather station in Surrey.
