Vancouver Rundown Tuesday May 13, 2025
Summary
A Maple Ridge city councillor has been charged with a half dozen assault and firearms offences. Ahmed Yousef says he’s stepping aside from council to focus his time and efforts on some personal matters. Those matters apparently include four charges of assault, one count of pointing a firearm and another gun-related offence. The City of Maple Ridge has issued a statement saying it can’t provide further details but the city will continue to conduct business as usual.
Other news…
Tensions appear to be growing between the Eby NDP government and its largest public sector union. The B.C. General Employees’ Union has accused the New Democrats of engaging in delay and intimidation tactics as the two sides appear stalled in reaching a new contract agreement. The current contract for close to 30,000 BCGEU members came to an end on March 31. The provincial debt is now at $100M and is expected to grow to $160M by 2028.
An arson charge has been laid against a 39-year-old woman from Surrey in connection with a house fire near 132nd A Street and 108 Avenue. The fire broke out in a fourplex in the early evening last Tuesday. The woman remains in custody pending her next court date.
Over 40 B.C. firefighters have been deployed in Manitoba as that province deals with a massive out-of-control wildfire in the north. It’s not clear how long the crews will be in the province. Right now, B.C. is dealing with a few small wildfires in the northeast.
A mix of sun and cloud for Tuesday. Clouds and possible showers Wednesday. Rain on Thursday. Here are the latest conditions from our private weather station in Surrey.
