Vancouver Rundown Tuesday November 5, 2024
Summary
The wind came late and stayed a little too long. More than 150 thousand homes and businesses were hit by blackouts as strong winds hit the Lower Mainland Monday. Some of the strongest winds on the south coast were almost 110 km/h keeping BC Hydro crews and contractors busy. Meanwhile, home and business owners have been asked to keep storm drains clear of leaves so water from the heavy rain can clear.
Other news…
Langley RCMP will take over policing for Barnston Island, in the Fraser River north of Surrey. The move comes as the Mounties in Surrey yield jurisdiction to a new Surrey Police Service. Barnston Island is an unincorporated area with close to 150 residents - many of whom are members of the Katzie First Nation.
There will be no jail time for an elderly man who drove his truck into residential school marchers in Mission. Richard Albert Manuel, 79, has received a 9-month conditional sentence for dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. On June 4, 2022, Manuel drove his pickup into four marchers near the site of the St. Mary’s Residential School on the Lougheed Highway.
A Vancouver-based developer is hoping to build a 29-storey hotel tower at the edge of Stanley Park. Marcon Developments has submitted a zoning application to build the 330 foot tower at Lost Lagoon - a building that would have both long and short-term accommodations. There’s no word on who would operate the hotel.
Mostly sunny with just a few clouds Tuesday. Sunshine Wednesday and Thursday. Here are the latest conditions from our private weather station in Surrey.
