Vancouver Rundown Tuesday October 1, 2024
Summary
All evacuation orders have been rescinded in a late-season wildfire burning at Christina Lake. Close to 42 homes had been under evacuation order over the weekend as an out-of-control fire burned close to Spaulding Creek and Highway 3. That’s only a couple dozen kilometres from the large Goosmus Wildfire burning in Washington state and some areas near Grande Forks.
Other news…
A pilot is okay after a small, single-occupant aircraft crashed into bushes not far from the Chilliwack Airport. It happened late Saturday morning. Emergency crews helped the pilot get out after the tip of his plane crashed through a fence alongside a bike bath.
There’s some community outrage after the Vancouver School Board approved initial plans for a 99-year-lease to a private developer to build a mixed-use commercial and residential complex on part of the Fleming Elementary School property in East Vancouver. Opponents call the process rushed and say the rental units will be at market value and unaffordable for most teachers or VSB employees. The exact price of the deal has not been disclosed.
Lower Mainland gas prices may still drop. Analysist say the recent downward trend is due to a combination of lower oil prices and a return to cheaper winter blends. Average prices have ranged from about 153.06/l in Abbotsford to 162.9/l around Vancouver. Some Analysts think there is room for another 10 cent per litre drop by the end of the year.
Clouds and showers Tuesday with possible afternoon sunny breaks. Sunny Wednesday and Thursday with inlands highs of 16. Here are the latest conditions from our private weather station in Surrey.
