Vancouver Rundown Wednesday April 10, 2024
Summary
The B.C. government will go it alone in a move that could cost Surrey taxpayers more money. Solicitor General Mike Farnworth says Mayor Brenda Locke and Surrey City Council have rejected the province’s final offer of $250 million to help cover the costs of a transition from the RCMP to the Surrey Police Service. Locke says Surrey has decided to keep the RCMP and any move to a city police force would be more expensive. A judicial review is still planned to see which side has the final say in who gets to be the force of jurisdiction in Surrey.
Other news…
Surrey will soon have cannabis stores. Eight years after marijuana was legalized in Canada, B.C.’s second largest city has agreed to a framework to allow up to a dozen cannabis retailers. Right now, those wanting to purchase legal gummies, oils and joints, have to go to neighbouring municipalities.
B.C.’s credit rating has been downgraded from AA to AA-. S&P Global says its decision is due to a relatively steep increase in debt that will continue through to 2027. The credit rating will make it more expensive for the province to borrow money for capital intensive projects.
He was considered by many to be a likably ‘pink Tory.’ John Fraser, Vancouver South Progressive Conservative MP from 1972 to 1993 and the first House Speaker to be chosen by secret ballot, has died. Fraser held two Cabinet posts under two separate prime ministers…Environment Minister with Joe Clark and Fisheries Minister in the Mulroney era. John Allen Fraser was 92.
A mix of sun and cloud Wednesday. Rain on Thursday. Back to clouds on Friday. Here are the latest conditions from our private weather station in Surrey.
