Vancouver Rundown Wednesday April 9, 2025
Summary
“I’m confident I’ll be able to serve the people of Burnaby Central” - that’s what NDP leader Jagmeet Singh has told party faithful during a campaign stop in Vancouver. Those words come despite various tracking polls that suggest the New Democrats may only win a single seat in B.C. and four across the country. Polls also suggest Singh will be soundly defeated by the Liberals in his riding. The latest Angus Reid Poll has the NDP at only 11 per cent support, country wide.

An Abbotsford man has been charged with 19 child pornography and luring counts. Michael Jose Vieira, 35, is accused of reported incidents between 2022 and this year. The charges range from possession and distribution of child pornography to uttering threats and luring minors. Police say multiple minors were contacted in the Abbotsford area with sexually explicit messages and requests to perform sexual acts.
ICBC is apologizing to new drivers for huge delays in booking driving tests. The corporation admits some of the delays are for up to seven months as it tries to hire more examiners. ICBC also says part of the problem is half of the new drivers fail their tests - it’s encouraging them to study and practice more.
A new baby orca has been spotted swimming with resident J-pod whales in the Strait of Juan de Fuca off Victoria. The calf, designated J-63, is the fourth to be born to the pod in the past year. The Center of Whale Research in Washington state is closely monitoring the pod but notes the calf appears to be healthy.
