Vancouver Rundown Wednesday April 17, 2024
Summary
Those in Vancouver and right across the country can expect to hear the government detailing more announcements around housing affordability while increasing the expanse of taxes for many top earners. Those are two of the key points coming out of Tuesday’s federal budget that includes $53 billion in new spending over the next five years. There will also be increases to excise taxes on smokes and vapes. There are no plans to deliver a balanced budget for the next five years - in fact, this year’s deficit is $40 billion.
Other news…
Firearms and assault charges have now been laid in against Justin Delaney Littlewolfe, 32, in a downtown shooting that left a bystander disfigured. A 46-year-old man was shot in the face near Homer and West Pender on April 3. It’s believed the victim was not the intended target and the shooting happened after an unrelated dispute.
The City of Vancouver has removed homeless tents from an area outside a designated spot in CRAB Park. The area within CRAB Park is the only legal encampment - full at 14 tents. The Vancouver Park Board says its actions are designed to restore the park to community use.
Charges could be laid against three Abbotsford Police officers in relation to a police chase that ended with a deadly crash. The Independent Investigations Office is recommending charges in the August 2022 pursuit of a stolen car. The Acura Integra hit a tree on Maclure Road near Clearbrook Road. A woman died at the scene. A man later died in hospital.
A few clouds on Wednesday but otherwise sunny. More sunshine for Thursday and Friday. Here are the latest details from our private weather station in Surrey.
