Vancouver Rundown Wednesday August 28, 2024
Summary
Public school students across B.C. will have to put away their cellphones while in class. The provincial government is requiring all school districts to enforces their own policies - ones that will restrict mobile devices on school property. Students and parents will also be offered digital literacy courses but the details have not yet been announced.
Other news…
A new opioid treatment phone line is coming to B.C. Addictions Minister Jennifer Whiteside says the Opioid Treatment Access Line will connect people in need with a team of doctors and nurses able to prescribe replacement drugs that mimic narcotics. The line is expected to help many people who are reluctant to walk into medical facilities to seek treatment.
We now know the 17-year-old student who fell to his death in Lynn Canyon on Sunday was a new UBC student. The teen from Ontario slipped on rocks while on a day trip to check out B.C.’s scenery. Dozens of teens have died in the same area over the years despite fences and warning signs.
Stormy weather may be to blame for a series of multi-injury crashes on Highway Five, north of Merritt on Tuesday. An air ambulance responded to one of the three crashes. Meanwhile, parts of the Okanagan Connector experienced some snow with wet and slippery conditions throughout.
Clouds will clear out on Wednesday. Expect sunshine right through the long weekend with warm temperatures. Here are the latest conditions from our private weather station in Surrey.
