Vancouverites will indeed pay a 3.9 per cent increase in their residential property taxes. That’s the smallest increase since Ken Sim became mayor, two years ago. City council approved its operating budget Tuesday afternoon but some point out it lacks detail. The Vancouver Police Department will get an extra $2.6M over what had been approved in a previous draft budget.

Close to a hundred nurses rallied in Burnaby on Tuesday, demanding safer working conditions. The BC Nurses Union says patient care is being affected due to an increase in its members being targeted by patient violence. The nurses want better systems for reporting violence at health facilities around the province.
A 29-year-old Canadian woman has been arrested in New Zealand after close to 10 kilos of meth were found in carry-on luggage. It happened after the woman arrived at an airport in Auckland on a flight from Vancouver. The meth was wrapped to look like a Christmas gift for under the tree.
Air Canada is now fueling some of its planes with new canola-based jet fuel from the Parkland Refinery in Burnaby. Parkland started pumping the fuel, which also contains animal fats, on Tuesday. It’s said to be Canada’s first commercial production of sustainable aviation fuel.
