Vancouver Rundown Wednesday February 21, 2024
Summary
David Eby’s NDP government will be focusing on new rules to protect B.C. renters and beefed up legislation to protect kids from protests at schools. Those priorities, outlined in the throne speech, come two days before the provincial budget and set up the government for what could be the last full term before an election is called. Both the B.C. United and B.C. Conservative leaders have blasted the speech as containing very little to deal with today’s issues.
Other news…
The Trudeau Liberals are kicking in $2B to help deal with B.C.’s housing crisis. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made a stop in Vancouver to say the crisis is complex and this money will help build 10,000 new homes in the next few years. He says BC Builds is an ambitious and fundamentally practical new housing program.
Three companies may be on the hook for what the City of Vancouver calls improper repair work on the Granville Bridge. The City claims upgrade work carried out between 2019 and 2021 led to degradation. A civil suit has been filed in B.C. Supreme Court.
Two 16-year-old boys have now been charged with gun related offences in connection with a home that was shot-up in South Surrey on Feb.1. No one was hurt when shots were fire at the house on 154th Street. The owner of the home is a prominent Sikh activist and friend of murdered Gurdwara president Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
Showers Wednesday. More showers Thursday but with some clear periods. Friday should have a mix of sun and clouds. Here are the latest conditions from our private weather station in Surrey.
