Summary
The Independent Investigations Office and the RCMP in Surrey continue to withhold information and details after a Mountie shot an autistic 15-year-old dead on Sunday. IIO Chief Civilian Director Jessica Berglund defends the lack of info saying patience is appreciated while the investigation is conducted thoroughly, fairly and to the highest standard possible. The Clayton Heights Secondary student died after falling into the snow with gunshot wounds - police say they had a lengthy interaction with the person after receiving reports of someone with a weapon. There is no indication anyone weapon was ever found. Friends describe the boy as friendly and kind. Classmates continue to receive grief counselling.

There is yet another delay in the trial of four men accused of killing Surrey Sikh temple president Hardeep Singh Nijjar. It may be April before a judge continues proceedings into the shooting death of the 45-year-old. Nijjar was gunned down in the parking lot of the Guru Nanak Gurdwara on June 18, 2023. Investigators have tied the case to supporter’s of India’s government which strongly opposes a separate Sikh state.
A well-known B.C. environmental group is calling on the provincial government to stop the development of a ski resort near Chilliwack. The Wilderness Committee says the Bridal Veil Mountain Resort will threaten the endangered spotted owl. Proponents say the resort would be owned and managed by First Nations - notably, the Sto:lo.
Clear skies and an upcoming geomagnetic storm could provide a chance for those in the Lower Mainland to see the northern lights later this week. The best viewing time is forecast for Thursday night into Valentine’s Day. The dancing green lights are expected to be low on the horizon…providing some prime viewing.
