Summary
You’ve been warned. Damn cold weather is on the way for the Lower Mainland. Thursday will likely be the transition day as some parts of the Fraser Valley could see temperatures (the lows) dip to the double digits below zero. There’s also a strong hint of snow in the forecast starting on Thursday. Wind will make it even worse…could this be the winter’s first true snow storm?
Other news…
Last week I drove by Vancouver’s Oppenheimer Park several times, noticing city crews and officers gazing toward the tents from their parked vehicles. Now it makes sense. Park rangers entered the park on Tuesday and started to haul off those same tents. Homeless advocates were quick to respond with a large round of shouting. Crews suggest the number of tents had doubled in the past couple of weeks and the removal is inline with city bylaws.
An arrest has been made after shots were fired at a driver near Commercial Drive and East 12th. It happened on Saturday night and the VPD says it was an escalation after a driver slammed on the brakes to avoid a jaywalker. That’s when a pedestrian fired a gun. Fortunately, the shot missed. An arrest was made.
The numbers are in and it appears the B.C. wildfires last summer caused about $720 million in insurable damage. That means wildfire and flood insurance will become even less affordable and/or available in the future. The fires burned close to 3 million hectares of B.C. land last year.
While Wednesday will have a mix of sun, clouds and possible showers, the cold air is approaching. Snow is a strong possibility for Thursday and right through the weekend. Here are the latest conditions from our private weather station in Surrey.
