Vancouver Rundown Wednesday January 22, 2025
Summary
Premier David Eby says British Columbians should rethink their American vacations now that Donald Trump appears poised to slap that 25 per cent tariff on Canadian goods as early as February 1. Eby is also not ruling out banning the sale of American wine in B.C. liquor stores, stopping U.S. companies from bidding on infrastructure projects and slapping new charges on truckers crossing the border to head up to Alaska. BC Conservative Leader John Rustad accuses Eby of being focused on framing Trump as a political enemy.
Other news…
It’s official…and not a surprise. Vancouver’s civic byelection will be April 5. Two council seats are open after Adriane Carr and Christine Boyle quit. Advance voting will be open at City Hall from March 26 to April 1.
Unionized Canada Line workers have ratified a five year contract. The new deal will be retroactive to December 2023 when the last contract expired. The Canada Line is operated and maintained by ProTransBC - a subsidiary of the company formerly known as SNC Lavalin.
B.C.’s most listened-to news-talk radio station is making a big switch at the end of February. CKNW will no longer be heard on 980 AM - switching to 730 AM where it’s been simulcast for the past several months after parent company Corus turfed its all traffic format. CKNW’s signal, with a transmitter site north of Cloverdale, is weak in downtown Vancouver. The 730 transmitter is newer, stronger and closer to the downtown core.
A mix of sun and cloud on Wednesday. Windy in some areas. Clouds and possible showers on Thursday. Sunny on Friday. Here are the latest conditions from our private weather station in Surrey.
