Vancouver Rundown (UPDATED) Wednesday January 8, 2025
Summary
Breaking News: Massive wildfires, fueled by hurricane force Santa Ana winds, continue to grow in suburbs around Los Angeles. Hundreds of homes have been destroyed by the Palisades Fire that started late Tuesday morning. Several people have been injured and crews have had a difficult time trying to get water to control the spread. Meanwhile, the Eaton Fire to the south - which broke out early Tuesday evening - has forced a new round of evacuations including close to a hundred people from a care home. Winds of over 100 kilometres an hour grounded fire fighting aircraft Tuesday evening. Extra ground crews have been called in from across Southern California.

‘We’re not becoming the 51st state’ - those are the words of Premier David Eby as he plans to head to Washington D.C. to fight threats of huge tariffs on Canadian goods. Eby will be joining other premiers in the hopes of stopping the 25 per cent tariffs threated by Donald Trump in his push to stop drugs and illegal aliens from coming into the States. Eby claims the U.S. imports things from Canada that it can’t get anywhere else.
Close to 3,000 people have now signed two petitions aimed at stopping a new crematorium from setting up in Surrey. Those living in the Tynehead neighbourhood say Five Rivers, which operates a funeral home in North Delta, should choose a better location. They’re concerned about possible environmental threats as the crematorium would be located close to Tynehead Park and its fish spawning area.
An injured eagle continues to recover at Delta’s Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation centre after being rescued from the Lions Gate Bridge over the weekend. The eagle was rescued from the bridge deck on Saturday - it has an injured eye and is suffering from apparent lead poisoning. His chances of a recovery are said to be good.
