Vancouver Rundown Wednesday June 5, 2024
Summary
Plans are in the works to remove a dead grey whale from a Boundary Bay mudflat near Crescent Beach. The cause of death will likely not be confirmed until late this summer once the DFO’s necropsy results are in. The Department got numerous calls on Sunday after people spotted the dead whale. Warmer weather may contribute to an increase in smell from the dead mammal.
Other news…
Several homes and cars have been targeted in an overnight crime spree in Tsawwassen. Reports came in early Monday morning that several garages were broken into after openers were stolen from cars. A 36-year-old woman from White Rock has been arrested after Delta Police pulled over a van. She remains in custody.
The cost of the Richmond Hospital expansion has more than doubled. A B.C. government update confirms the latest cost is pegged at close to $2B. The existing hospital facilities are far too small for Richmond’s growth and some of the infrastructure is not up to earthquake standards.
Fewer homes have sold in the Vancouver area due to an increase in supply. Numbers for the Greater Vancouver Real Estate Board show a 20 per cent drop in May in what’s been described as a surprise. Those numbers were released a day before the Bank of Canada’s Wednesday interest rate announcement.
It’s going to start feeling like summer with clouds giving way to sunshine Wednesday. Thursday and Friday will be sunny and even warmer with inland highs of 27 degrees. Here are the latest conditions from our private weather station in Surrey.
