Vancouver Rundown Wednesday March 26, 2025
Summary
The B.C. carbon tax will be scrapped on April Fools Day. The provincial government is urging gas stations to get ready for the change which will take place on April 1 and comes after Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the feds will back-off consumer carbon taxes next week. B.C.’s tax is said to add about 17 cents per litre to the price of regular gas.
Other news…
Three skiers have been killed in a backcountry avalanche in the West Kootenay. Another person in that group has been treated for serious injuries. The snow slide happened early Monday afternoon as two groups of heli-skiers were setting-up in an area on the east side of Kootenay Lake. The other group managed to hear a warning and get clear of the avalanche.
An erratic driver, possibly trying to elude police, appears to be responsible for a series of Tuesday afternoon crashes along a Burnaby stretch of Highway One. The noon hour crashes tied-up traffic in the east lanes between Brunette and Gaglardi. The driver ditched their car and hid in some bushes before being nabbed by police.
A Burnaby public high school teacher has been disciplined for a series of indiscretions including not using students’ preferred pronouns. BC’s Teacher Regulation branch says William Donald Harvey failed to provide a positive and inclusive classroom environment. It also says Harvey taught students how to say ‘slut’ in French and used a pejorative term while discussing Pakistan. Harvey has agreed to take sensitivity courses run by the BC Teachers Federation.
A mix of sun and cloud for Wednesday with the slight chance of thunder showers. Showers for Thursday and Friday. Here are the latest conditions from our private weather station in Surrey.
