Vancouver Rundown Wednesday March 5, 2025
Summary
There are some mixed messages as Donald Trump appears poised to double-down on his trade war with Canada. While not mentioning this country or Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Trump has used his Tuesday evening address to a joint session of Congress to say reciprocal tariffs are coming April 2 for countries that impose duties on the U.S. The U.S. Commerce Secretary said earlier Trump may announce some relief for Canada and Mexico on Wednesday.
Other news…
$10.9B - that is this year’s B.C. budget deficit. The provincial government has presented its largest ever deficit and increased its debt calling the fiscal plan ‘Standing Strong for B.C.’ Finance Minister Brenda Bailey says it prepares the province to navigate uncharted waters, put people first and support business for a more self-sufficient future. British Columbians will get a one time ICBC rebate of $110 while some renters will get slight increases in relief cheques.
The federal Conservatives have blocked long time MLA Mike de Jong’s hopes of becoming the next MP for Abbotsford-South Langley. The former BC United, Liberal and Social Credit politician claims he was told by party officials that he’s not sufficiently qualified to serve as a Member of Parliament. De Jong says it’s difficult to understand and comes despite the local electoral district’s selection committee endorsing his candidacy.
The young man gunned down along the Surrey side of the boundary with Delta has been linked to organized crime. Jaskaran Singh Minhas, 29, was shot in a busy area near Scott Road - a burned out vehicle was found in Delta a short time later. No arrests have been made and gang investigators continue to look for suspects.
A mix of clouds, showers, sunny periods and all with gusty wind on Wednesday. Sunny Thursday. Mostly sunny Friday. Here are the latest conditions from our private weather station in Surrey.
