Vancouver Rundown Wednesday May 22, 2024
Summary
The B.C. NDP will likely focus on the B.C. Conservatives with yet another poll showing Kevin Falcon’s B.C. United falling to irrelevancy. A Research Co poll released Tuesday comes with the headline: NDP First, Conservatives Rise, United Plummets in British Columbia. The New Democrats still hold a ten point lead at 42 per cent but B.C. United is tied with the Greens at 12 per cent. Surprisingly, the 18-34-year-olds favour the Conservatives over the NDP by five points.
Breaking: London Drugs has been given 48 hours to pay cyber attackers $25M in ransom. The retailer has confirmed the demand linked to the recent ransom attack but won’t comment on reports it has offered to pay $8M. The cyber attack group is not sharing details about what sort of data it has - London Drugs says employee data may be at risk but there is no evidence of a breach of customer data.

Tuesday afternoon traffic on Highway One hit an unfortunate snarl with yet another Lower Mainland truck scraping an overpass. The latest happened at the 232nd overpass in Langley and shutdown the right lane for a while. There’s no early word on the extent of damage. There have been at least a dozen overpass incidents involving trucks in B.C. this year.
A B.C. high school teacher has been suspended for 15 years after kissing a student at a graduation house party. The name of the teacher and the school have not been released but the Teacher Regulation branch says the suspension has been accepted. The party was organized by the teachers’ own adult children and most of the attendees were university students.
A Tuesday frontal system dumped heavy rain on much of the Lower Mainland while providing relief for fire crews in the northeastern corner of the province. Both the Coquihalla and Highway 3 mountain passes had snowfalls. Travelers were advised to use caution as winter tires are no longer required in May.
Wednesday should have a good mix of sun, clouds and showers. Mostly cloudy on Thursday. Clouds and showers for Friday. Here are the latest conditions from our private weather station in Surrey.
