Vancouver Rundown Wednesday May 29, 2024
Summary
Freight trains have been used to smuggle people from B.C. into the United States. Two Americans have been arrested and are accused of smuggling dozens of people across the line at the Peace Arch Border. Close to 30 Mexican nationals and one Columbian were found inside one of the cars, concealed inside a load of plastic pellets. American law enforcement has been tracking the smuggling operation since 2022.
Other news…
A B.C. to Calgary WestJet flight had to make an unexpected landing in Terrace after a passenger became unhinged. RCMP in Terrace say it happened over the noon hour on Monday when the passenger showed signs of paranoia and tried to open the exits. It’s believed the man was stoned on some sort of drugs.
The Canadian Union of Public Employees - better known as CUPE - has fired the entire executive board of the local that represents City of Vancouver workers. Senior union leaders say the executive members stopped doing their jobs, putting members of Local 1004 at risk. That local represents workers in the city engineering department, park board as well as those with Easy Park and the PNE.
Free parking is coming back to the West Cordova Parkade in Gastown. The Gastown Business Improvement Association is providing free parking for up to three hours in a move aimed at boosting restaurant and retail visits. The promotion will coincide with Gastown’s car-free pilot project this summer.
A slight chance of thundershowers remains in the forecast for Wednesday - otherwise it will be a mix of sun, clouds and rain. Thursday and Friday will be mostly cloudy. Here are the latest conditions from our private weather station in Surrey.
