Vancouver Rundown Wednesday May 8, 2024
Summary
Once again, it’s illegal to use hard drugs in public in B.C. The federal government has now approved the province’s policy reversal effective immediately. The troubled pilot project had allowed British Columbians to carry and use small amounts of crack, coke, meth and other hard drugs. Critics had pointed out such drugs were being consumed in hospitals, parks and other public spots while tainted drug overdoses continued to rise.
Other news…
Some members of B.C.’s Sikh community demonstrated outside a Surrey court house on Tuesday as three men made a first appearance on charges in last June’s shooting death of Hardeep Singh Nijjar outside the gurdwara on Scott Road. The three were arrested in Edmonton last week in what police and our federal government consider a hit sponsored by the Indian government. Nijjar was an outspoken advocate and campaigner for a separate Sikh controlled state in India.
Delta council has turned on its mayor and voted to remove George Harvie as chair of Metro Vancouver. A joint statement notes the decision reflects council’s loss of confidence in the mayor to represent Delta’s interests in Metro Vancouver. Harvie is in his second term as mayor.
A sad note in the B.C. labour movement. Kim Novak, the youngest and first female leader of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union - Local 1518 has passed away following a brain hemorrhage. Her family was by her side. UFCW represents many grocery workers including those at Save-On-Foods and Safeway.
Here comes the sun. And it will be warm for the next few days but not nearly as hot as some had thought - the earlier forecasts were off. Here are the latest conditions from our private weather station in Surrey.
